How to Split a PDF
Two different jobs share the word split. Work out which one you want first.

The short answer
Splitting means one of two things. Extracting keeps a range of pages and discards the rest, which gives you one smaller document. Bursting cuts every page into its own file, which gives you as many files as there were pages. Both run in your browser here. The trap in both is numbering: the numbers printed on the paper are usually not the numbers the file counts by.

Both operations copy pages rather than re-encode them, so nothing in the output looks any different from what went in.
The printed page numbers are not the file’s page numbers
A document with a cover, a contents page and roman numbered front matter will have the page printed as 1 sitting at file page 5, or 9. A PDF counts from the first sheet, including every unnumbered one, and it has no idea what is printed on any of them.
So check the position rather than the printed number before typing a range. Scrolling to the page you mean and reading the counter in your reader takes a few seconds, and it is the difference between the right range and one that is off by four.
A range says what to keep
This is the one that catches people. Asking for pages 3 to 7 gives you a five page document, not the original with those five removed. Cutting a section out of the middle means naming everything else, which is two ranges rather than one.
The parts can add up to more than the whole
Cut a fifty page report into fifty files and the total on disk will usually be larger than the original, sometimes considerably. Fonts and images that were embedded once and shared by every page have to be embedded again in each file that needs them.
It is not a fault and there is nothing to tune. It is worth knowing before you burst a long document and wonder what happened.
Splitting is not how you make a PDF smaller
Plenty of people arrive at splitting with a size problem: something will not attach to an email. Splitting divides a document into pieces, and each piece carries its own share of the weight plus a copy of anything that was shared. If the goal is a smaller file rather than fewer pages, compression is the operation, and what is actually large is almost always the scanned images inside.
Doing it without uploading
