HEIC to JPG
The format your phone writes, in the one everything reads
What the conversion sites charge
| TinyPNG Web Pro | monthly, and the file goes to their servers | |
| Convertio | upload every photo, with a daily cap | |
| Zamzar | upload every photo, with a size cap | |
| PixPunk | Free | no upload, no account, no daily cap |
This is the conversion people do in batches of forty, which is exactly the shape a daily cap is built to charge for. Nothing here counts how many you did, because nothing here sees them.

Why your photos are HEIC at all
An iPhone has written HEIC by default since 2017, and it is a genuinely better format: about half the size of the same photo as JPG, at the same quality. The problem was never the format, it is everything that will not open it.

What actually opens one
Apple everywhere, Windows with a codec Microsoft charges for, recent Android, and very little else. Older editing software, most web upload forms, printing services and a lot of company laptops will simply refuse the file.

What converting costs you
Size, and a little quality. A JPG of the same photo is roughly twice the file for the same picture, and going from one lossy format to another loses a small amount that cannot come back. That is the price of a file everything opens, and it is usually worth paying.
FAQ
- How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
- Drop the photos on this page. They convert in your browser, so there is no upload, no account and no limit on how many you do.
- Can I do a whole camera roll at once?
- Select as many as you like and they are converted one after another, with each one appearing as it finishes. They are done in turn rather than all together because a twelve megapixel photo is a lot of memory while it is being written, and forty at once is a tab that stops responding.
- Will the photo look worse?
- Slightly, and once. HEIC and JPG are both lossy, so re-encoding throws away a little that cannot be recovered. At quality 90, which is the default here, the difference is not visible on a photograph. The quality control is there if you want to spend more file on it.
- Why is the JPG so much bigger?
- Because HEIC is better at this. Roughly half the size for the same picture is the whole reason Apple switched. You are trading that back for a file that opens everywhere.
- Does the photo come out the right way up?
- Yes. A phone records which way it was held rather than turning the picture, and that instruction is applied here, so a photo taken sideways arrives upright rather than on its side.
- What happens to the colours?
- They are kept. A photo that carries its own colour profile has that profile written into the JPG, so a wide gamut picture does not arrive flattened and dull. Most phone photos name a standard colour space instead, and those are unchanged.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. They are opened and written back out in the page. No request carries them anywhere, which the network panel will show you while it runs.
