PNG is the wrong answer for a holiday photo and the right one for a file that is about to be edited, cropped and saved again. The difference is whether anything downstream is going to re-encode it.

Whether you want PNG at all
If the photo is going to be looked at, emailed or uploaded, JPG is the better answer and there is a page here for that. PNG earns its keep when the file is a step rather than a destination.

What PNG gives you
Nothing thrown away. The picture that comes out is exactly what the HEIC decoded to, so an edit, a crop and a re-save do not stack one compression on top of another. A screenshot or a document photographed on a phone also stays crisp where JPG would leave a haze around the text.
