Why MOV
Because a Mac is asking. Final Cut, iMovie, QuickTime and Photos will all decline a WebM outright, and MOV is the box they expect a piece of footage to arrive in.

What it costs you
Real time. VP9 cannot sit inside a MOV, so the picture is decoded and encoded again frame by frame, which takes roughly as long as the video runs. Nothing about this one is instant.

- How do I convert WebM to MOV?

- Why will Final Cut not import my WebM?
- Apple has never supported it. WebM was built for playback in a browser, and outside that it is refused by most software that edits video.
- Does the quality drop?
- A little, once. The picture has to be re-encoded rather than moved, so pick the higher quality setting if this file is going into an edit rather than straight to a viewer.
- Why is this slower than a rewrap?
- Because nothing can be copied across. When two containers can hold the same picture, the frames move untouched in seconds. These two cannot, so every frame goes through the encoder.
- Should I convert to MOV or MP4?
- MOV if a Mac editor is what is asking. MP4 if you just want the thing to play everywhere, which is the more common reason to be leaving a WebM at all.
- Is the file uploaded?
- No. The video is opened and written back out in the page. No request carries it anywhere, which the network panel will show you while it runs.
