WebM was designed for one job, which is playing inside a browser. Everywhere else it is the file that gets refused, and that is what sends people to this page.

  1. 1

    Where your WebM came from

Something on the web handed it to you. A downloaded clip, a browser recording, a screen capture tool that writes what the browser writes. Nothing on your machine made it on purpose.

  2. 2

    Why MOV

Because a Mac is asking. Final Cut, iMovie, QuickTime and Photos will all decline a WebM outright, and MOV is the box they expect a piece of footage to arrive in.

  3. 3

    What it costs you

Real time. VP9 cannot sit inside a MOV, so the picture is decoded and encoded again frame by frame, which takes roughly as long as the video runs. Nothing about this one is instant.

FAQ

How do I convert WebM to MOV?
Drop the file on this page and press the button. It runs in your browser, so there is no upload, no account and no daily limit.
Why will Final Cut not import my WebM?
Apple has never supported it. WebM was built for playback in a browser, and outside that it is refused by most software that edits video.
Does the quality drop?
A little, once. The picture has to be re-encoded rather than moved, so pick the higher quality setting if this file is going into an edit rather than straight to a viewer.
Why is this slower than a rewrap?
Because nothing can be copied across. When two containers can hold the same picture, the frames move untouched in seconds. These two cannot, so every frame goes through the encoder.
Should I convert to MOV or MP4?
MOV if a Mac editor is what is asking. MP4 if you just want the thing to play everywhere, which is the more common reason to be leaving a WebM at all.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The video is opened and written back out in the page. No request carries it anywhere, which the network panel will show you while it runs.
