FAQ
- Is my file uploaded?
- No. The browser decodes it, re-encodes it and hands it back, and no request carries your audio anywhere. You can watch the network panel while it runs.
- Which formats can it read?
- Anything the browser itself can play, which in practice means MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG and the audio track of MP4 and MOV files. If your player opens it, this will too.
- Does it change the sample rate?
- Not for a WAV or an MP3: the rate is stated in the first bytes of those files and it is read and kept. For anything else the browser decodes at its own rate, which is usually 44.1 or 48 kHz, and the figure shown above the buttons is the real one for the file you are about to get.
- Which bitrate should I pick?
- 192 kbps is the usual answer for music and is the default here. Speech is fine at 128. 320 is the highest MP3 goes and is worth it only if the source was better than the target.
- Does converting to MP3 lose quality?
- Yes, MP3 is lossy, and re-encoding an MP3 loses a little more. Converting to WAV loses nothing from that point on, at the cost of a much larger file. Neither can recover what an earlier encode already discarded.
- Is there a length or size limit?
- Up to 500 MB per file. Long recordings take real time to encode because the work happens on your own processor rather than on a server, and the progress figure is honest about it.
