- What formats can I put in?
- Whatever the browser will play, which in practice covers MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and most AVI files. Anything it cannot read is refused up front rather than half converted.
- Why WebM rather than MP4?
- Size, on a page you control. If the file is going to a person instead of a page, MP4 is the better answer and there is a page here for that too.
- Will it play everywhere?
- In every current browser, yes. Outside a browser it is patchier: some editors, phone galleries and chat previews would rather have an MP4.
- Why does it take so long?
- Because every frame goes through the encoder. Conversions that only change the box around the picture finish in seconds; this one cannot, because almost nothing already holds the picture in a shape WebM accepts.
- Is the file uploaded?
- No. The video is opened and written back out in the page. No request carries it anywhere, which the network panel will show you while it runs.
